Vintage Autumn Capsule Wardrobe || Day Two

This past week I realized that all of the clothes I grabbed to take with me for our temporary stay at a friend’s house are semi-coordinated to create an autumn capsule wardrobe! I didn’t do this intentionally. When I packed, I was literally just grabbing colors I thought I might wear for a week or so stay. That week has turned into two, and will be at least two more. So what I have is all I have at the moment. I laid it all out on my bed, and realized… I could create an entire month of outfits from the 14 pieces I have!

For the next month or so, I’ll be trying to remix and rewear as many of these items as I can. I’ve never done a capsule wardrobe before, but looking at my options this time has me so excited! I’ve definitely tried to limit my wardrobe choices before. The amount of times I tried doing a 30×30 back in the day! I never really succeeded because back then my wardrobe didn’t have much direction. Now, I’ve begun to settle firmly into a certain color scheme for fall as well as a certain aesthetic (1940’s wartime farm wife, with some fairytale thrown in) so the things that I own all meld and work together MUCH better.

This look is day two. I will be making a video of the entire experience to share at the end of the month. I really want to show that having a plethora of stylish retro or vintage outfits doesn’t have to be hard or expensive, and you don’t have to have a closet full of clothes to get a certain look! Most of what I brought is secondhand and much of it is vintage. In fact, of the 15 pieces I have, only five were purchased brand new!

I am not counting shoes as wardrobe pieces, although my shoes are also limited. I have two pairs of flats, one pair of sandals, and one pair of boots. Though I am hoping that my dad can ferry up my other pair of boots, because these are great but they’re not quite neutrals! A good pair of black boots would be incredibly useful both for the weather and for remixing.

Today’s outfit makes me feel all sorts of “1940’s era farm wife” with the plaid skirt, warm wool blazer, and pretty lace details of the blouse. While my hair certainly isn’t very 1940’s, the overall effect made me happy. I cannot wait to get back to my curlers and start rolling my hair again, though! There’s just something about curled hair that makes an entire outfit so much more vintage looking.

One thing I am excited about is the amount of thrifted items in my autumn capsule wardrobe. I thrifted these boots from Goodwill on my second ever thrift-hunt now that we live in a new place, and to be honest, it may not have been the greatest idea. While they look beautiful in photos, the bottoms are far more cracked than I realized. I may need to re-sole them. Still, for some otherwise pristine hunter green vintage boots, $6 is not bad!

And they were a perfect addition to my autumn capsule wardrobe. The colors mainly consist of greens, oranges, and reds, with side notes of browns and blacks. I do have one or two items in there that are challenging. For instance, a very Morticia-Addams-feeling velvet jacket with dramatic sleeves that I’m not 100% sure how to style. But that’s the very reason why I have it in there! It’s a beautiful piece, and it deserves a bit more time “out”.

What pieces are you adding to your wardrobe this autumn?
