Mixing Up the Holidays

I am only just getting around to sharing this outfit because 1. I am a very late person, 2. I made this skirt for Skye but liked it so much I had to wear it before I sent it to her, and 3. I had to wait for her to wear it on her blog. And then, I am just… a procrastinator. Because you guys, I made this for Skye’s birthday which was six months before I finished and mailed it to her. So, yes.

To further cement my procrastination skills, today I am finally starting AND finishing a few Christmas gifts for my family and my husband.

So that’s why, on the eve of Christmas Eve, I am sharing an all-black outfit and a skirt with little dancing skeletons on it. It’s an outfit I photographed over a month ago, featuring a skirt I finished late as ever for a friend who shared it also about a month ago… that I only just realized I needed to share. I would be modeling the Christmas skirt I finished earlier this week, but it is currently raining buckets in true Washington Christmas style, and I hate taking indoor outfit photos.

And after making this skirt — complete with skeleton head buttons, orange rickrack, and white lace to give it even more of a Skye-esque flair — I was so pleased that I finished two more! You already saw my Star Wars skirt — and if you haven’t, go here! — and I am really hoping that it snows tomorrow so I can share my Christmas skirt — the fabric of which you can see here — just in time for Christmas. But I have to get back to my crafts so I can finish everyones’ presents by Christmas! Which is two days away already, how did that happen? Are you a late gift buyer/creator, or do you get presents WAY ahead of time? Do you make them, buy them,  both? What are your Christmas traditions?

I hope you all have a fun Christmas!

What Would a Hobbit Wear?

What Would a Hobbit Wear? | www.eccentricowl.comDressember DaysWhat Would a Hobbit Wear? | www.eccentricowl.com  It’s finally Hobbit day! Today is kind of feeling bittersweet for me; I am so excited to go see The Battle of Five Armies, but I really, really don’t want Middle Earth to end. And it hit me the other day that this is probably the very last Tolkien movie to come out. At least, for a long, long time. My husband has said that the Tolkien estates won’t sell the rights to any of his other works, so… as far as we know, this is it.

And I’m sad. But, you know, I would be happier if someone decided to make a trilogy (or… double trilogy) of Gormenghast. I love the TV miniseries they did, but MAN there is so much in the books that isn’t in the miniseries! What Would a Hobbit Wear? | www.eccentricowl.comWhat Would a Hobbit Wear? | www.eccentricowl.com Since we never got to dress as Hobbits or Elves for any of the movies, I decided the next best thing would be this dress. It’s always been a very Hobbit dress to me because of the bright colors and the patterns. The trees remind me of Middle Earth trees, and I think if a Hobbit came to modern times in this world, this would probably be a dress she’d wear.

My only problem styling it for winter is that I don’t really like the way my yellow cardigan looks with it, and I don’t have any others that I’d like to pair with the dress. So I figured that a modern-day Hobbit would also be very farmy (obviously) and that this plaid shirt, which reminds me of a farm girl, would work instead. What Would a Hobbit Wear? | www.eccentricowl.com What Would a Hobbit Wear? | www.eccentricowl.com And you guys, I have been trying REALLY hard not to keep repeating the same two pairs of shoes with every outfit… but these boots (worn here, here, here, and here) go with everything. Same for the yellow T-strap wedges (here, here, here, here, here, and here… and in one outfit I haven’t even posted yet ). They hold up well, they’re waterproof, they’re comfortable, and they match every single thing in my closet.

And I originally had different shoes on, less practical ones, but I’m going adventuring with a friend today, so… boots it is. I really need to amp up my practical shoe game. What Would a Hobbit Wear? | www.eccentricowl.comShirt, thrifted | dress, Romy | tights, Target | boots, JC Penney | necklace, gift from husband | glasses, c/o Firmoo

I hope you all have a wonderful day! I am hoping sometime today after our adventures to make Mr. Owl and myself some Christmas stockings, because we can’t find ours from last year… and… we can’t afford to buy new ones. This Christmas really is the Christmas of handmade everything. I kind of love it, actually!

Happy Wednesday!

(Why the heck do movies premier in the middle of the week???)

Lazy Mode

Lazy Mode | www.eccentricowl.comDressember DaysLazy Mode | www.eccentricowl.com Mondays are for no makeup, running errands, cozy sweaters, and Christmassy scarves.

Asa is teething so hard his gums at one impending tooth are actually black and blue! Poor little guy. But he’s happy enough, and he’s ready for a nap, so this post will be short!

Lazy Mode | www.eccentricowl.com I’m not usually one for wearing a chunky, loose sweater over a dress, but this sweater was way too cute to pass up, especially when paired with this equally gorgeous scarf! I actually love this outfit, even though it’s not traditionally the most flattering on me. The sweater is way too comfortable to even care. Plus, it’s my and Mr Owl’s anniversary so today I’m running around the house trying to clean up and plan a somewhat nice dinner. We sort of celebrated last Friday, so tonight will be more relaxed.

Most likely we’re eating homemade Mongolian Beef and watching extras from the extended edition of The Desolation of Smaug while cuddling under the Lord of the Rings blanket I bought him for our anniversary and drinking a bottle of Smaug Stout just because it’s Hobbit-themed.

Because we’re cool like that. Lazy Mode | www.eccentricowl.com Lazy Mode | www.eccentricowl.comLazy Mode | www.eccentricowl.com

P.S. Not to be annoying about it, but the Firmoo Blogger contest is still going! I don’t expect to win anything, but hey… I might as well try, if you want to keep voting every day!

Dressember is Here!

Dressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.comDressember Day OneDressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.com It’s December! I cannot believe we are here already, but I am so excited to participate in another Dressember.

If you weren’t around last year and are wondering, Dressember is a fashion challenge for charity: women (and men, I suppose) wear a dress every day of the month in December to raise money towards freeing enslaved and abused women all over the world. 100% of the donated funds go directly to the International Justice Mission, an organization that helps abolish slavery, sexual exploitation, and other forms of oppression.

Dressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.com I found Dressember last year through a sponsor, and I was immediately drawn to help!

It is a cause that resonates deeply with me as a woman, as a style blogger, and as a follower of Christ, and I am excited every year to put into action these two verses: Proverbs 31:8 and Psalm 82:3, which say respectively “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.” and “Stand up for those who are weak and for those whose fathers have died. See to it that those who are poor and those who are beaten down are treated fairly.

I have always wanted to do something better with my blog, and every year I will definitely be utilizing my resources to help this campaign. I mean, I do have over 50 dresses, so I can definitely wear one every day of the month for something like this!Dressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.com And what better way to kick off the month than with this gorgeous dress? I’d had my eye on this dress already, but then when I won a giveaway for credits to New Old Fashion Vintage, that just sealed the deal and I snapped it up immediately! I cannot resist prints like this: flowers, mushrooms, and butterflies are RIGHT up my alley. Plus, it’s got a twirly skirt and will transition through all of the seasons pretty well!  Dressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.com Dressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.comDressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.com For the entirety of the month I will be offering anyone who donates $10 or more to my campaign (which all goes to the mission!) a medium sized month-long ad in my sidebar. All you have to do is donate, let me know you’ve done so, and send me over your ad! (via email, please!) So if you want to be a part but you don’t have enough dresses, here’s your chance!Dressember is Here! | www.eccentricowl.com

And if you have started your own campaign, let me know! I want to see your beautiful dresses! I will be trying to do a Dressember link-up every week with my favorites from those of you that are participating!

I hope you all have a wonderful Monday, and happy dress-wearing!

Let It Snow…

Let It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.comLet It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.com Oh my goodness, you guys!!! SNOW. (Okay, so that’s obvious.)

I know in some parts of the world people get snow all the time and therefore hate it, but in my part of the world… winter = rain, or clouds, or just misery. Rarely snow. I think last year we got a smattering of snow maybe once, and it wasn’t even pretty snow. It was slushy, gross snow.

So to wake up this morning to a winter wonderland… I was pretty excited. Especially because we had planned to take our first little family Christmas card picture today. Everything turned out so perfectly!

Let It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.com Suffice it to say, though, this was the shortest self-shot outfit photoshoot I have EVER done. Because not only did we first take family shots so that my husband could get Asa back inside while I commenced my own photoshoot, but then the wind kicked up and basically froze my hands into claws. So cold.

It’s worth it for this, though. We might attempt a photoshoot in the cape I made for my husband’s Red Riding Hood film, because how amazing would that be? The cape is incredibly flowy; it’s that kind of filmy fabric that is light enough to catch the wind and flow dramatically when you run, but still heavy enough not to just flip out everywhere. I love it. Let It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.comLet It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.com I figured that since I posted a list of DIY projects yesterday, that could suffice as this week’s weekend links. Especially since I haven’t been online much because of Thanksgiving, and today is my last day to post an outfit that is not a dress.

Dressember starts on Monday! I mean, I will probably layer skirts over dresses, because that’s legal (the only rules are… wear a dress. Style it however, but it has to be a dress!) but I’m not as good at that as some people are. Let It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.com Let It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.comLet It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.com Also, I cannot express enough how much I love this entire outfit. The flower crown, which is a gorgeous little crown from Choies (it’s actually big enough to wear as a headband, but I pinned it up a bit), the plaid skirt, my favorite animal-printed shirt, this scarf my husband made… it all matches my hair… and snow. Love. Let It Snow... | www.eccentricowl.com

Flower crown c/o Choies | shirt, belt, sweater, and vintage skirt, thrifted | boots, JC Penney | tights, Target | scarf, husband made | glasses, c/o Firmoo

Speaking of Choies, if you want anything from their site now is the perfect time; they’re running their cyber weekend sale right now and you can get SO many things for amazing prices. Like this cape (I’m addicted to capes right now), or this gorgeous lace shirt (so perfect for Christmas!), or this adorable striped dress (can you tell I’m into black and white right now?). It’s my first year really getting into Black Friday and Cyber Monday/Cyber Weekend shopping, and it’s been super fun visiting my favorite sites to snag deals!

Anyway! I hope you are all having a wonderful, warm, safe weekend wherever you are! Happy Saturday!
